1938 LEMONT POST OFFICE MURAL
The beautiful mural hanging at the Lemont Post Office was part of the WPA Project by the U.S. Treasury Dept. and approved in 1937. The Chicago artist, Charles Turzak, was commissioned to create s mural depicting the historic events of this region and visited the Lemont area several times for inspiration. It was completed and hung in May of 1938 in the Lemont Post Office and Mr. & Mrs. Turzak were in attendance.
Entitled “Old Tow Boat Scene” it recreates bygone days when the Illinois & Michigan Canal was an important part of the business life of the region. It shows the canal banks and rock bound stream with canal boats on it and a mule pulling another through a close passage, while a family seeking the west by water rests on the freighter and a deck hand protects another boat from injury as the mule power pulls the vessel slowly along. Coloring is natural and the whole canal scene realistic.
Note: Only WPA Project Mural Still In Existence Today.
